From the beginning, Syntax read as a program. Order 1, 2, 3. One form, then another, each with its consequence. I always said: this language comes from BASIC, it really runs. That was true. It was even my pride.

Then I authorized the line. Only one condition: that it cuts a closed shape. A circle, a triangle, a square. Never in a vacuum.

With a limit. The trait cannot cut off an elaborate form. One instance belongs to one class, it is related to the others. Severing it would break this bond, or impose it on all. The trait therefore cuts only the free, which still does not belong to any class.

And there something moves. The line doesn't happen after. He's going through what's already laid. It's no longer « line 10, line 20 ». It's a relationship in space, not a step in time. A code, in the strict sense, does not know how to do this without coordinates, without detours.

So the question goes up, and I prefer to leave it open rather than close it too fast.

Does Syntax need to remain translatable to code?

I wonder if the execution wasn't a skin. The shape inherited from my eleven years old, the VIC-20, the first line typed in the cellar. One way to reassure me: as long as it runs, it doesn't cheat. But what makes Syntax, is it really the sequence? Or is it the rule – the fact that nothing appears without reason?

The line respects the rule. There is only if he cuts a form, and never a form linked to a class. The constraint remains complete. It is only the reading that changes: it spends time in space.

The real question remains, the one I keep for the end because I don't have the answer.

Should a Syntax work read without having to translate it into code? If the look feels that there is an order, a logic, a fixed intention, even without knowing how to decode, then the code was just a scaffolding. We can take it off.

But if I have to explain so we can understand, then I didn't make a language. I made a drawing that I justify.

I don't know which side Syntax is leaning on yet. Perhaps that is the trait: the moment when language ceases to want to prove that it is a code, and begins to read itself.
